Legacy of Learning FAQs
Q Who is going to receive these scholarships?
Any applicant who meets the criteria for selection. We will award 20 or more scholarships each year out of the Legacy of Learning endowment fund. At least one scholarship will be awarded by WEASC to each Technical College in South Carolina, in addition to the existing USC scholarship and the Abernathy Scholarship at Clemson. The remaining will be awarded by SCAWWA to a four year college or university of the applicant’s choice.
Q What are the criteria for selection?
The SCAWWA Scholarship Committee will use a points-based ranking system that gives preference to individuals who are immediate family members of SCAWWA members, are currently employed in and plan to pursue a degree program in an environmental field, plan to attend a 4-year post secondary institution located in South Carolina, have been determined eligible for needs based financial assistance and have achieved a B or higher grade point average. Others will be considered, depending on the size of the applicant pool.
WEASC will award scholarships based on criteria that will include Association membership, or affiliation, and study in an environmental field in the pursuit of an appropriate degree offered by the enrolling institution. WEASC will continue to award existing scholarships as follows: The A. Ray Abernathy fellow must be an outstanding graduate student in the Environmental Engineering and Science Department at Clemson University. The University of South Carolina scholar must be a junior or senior civil engineering student.
Q What schools will students be able to attend?
Generally, the school of their choice. However, the SCAWWA will give preference to in-state, 4-year post secondary institutions and the WEASC will give preference to ensuring that at least one scholarship is available to a community college in each District.
| Q |
What if an applicant has a degree but wants to go back for a graduate degree? |
The applicant may apply for the SCAWWA Legacy of Learning Scholarship, or the WEASC A. Ray Abernathy Scholarship at Clemson University.
Q Can I designate my gift to be for either WEASC or SCAWWA?
Yes. Please write your instructions on your pledge form.
| Q |
Must I designate my gift to one or the other of the associations? |
No. Undesignated gifts will be shared equally between each association’s scholarship awards (50/50 WEA - AWWA).
| Q |
I am interested in a naming gift, but would like my contribution to equally benefit WEASC and SCAWWA – how would that work? |
Each association will in that case award the scholarship on alternate years.
| Q |
Why is WEASC giving its scholarships to tech schools and SCAWWA giving its scholarships to four-year colleges? |
WEA currently awards an annual scholarship to USC, and endowed Clemson University to set up the Abernathy Scholarship. For this reason WEA chose to award LOL scholarships to students who elect to study at smaller institutions. SCAWWA elected to balance LOL awards by awarding to applicants studying at four-year schools.

I am very much in support of the Scholarship Capital Campaign, but am unable to make any kind of gift or pledge at this time. Will there be other opportunities for me to contribute later? |
Definitely, and we thank you for your support. Please note on your pledge form when you would like to be contacted, e.g., in 3 months, 6 months, one year.
| Q |
Now that I have made my pledge, how will I be kept informed of the progress of the Capital Campaign and how the scholarship money is being spent? |
Campaign progress and subsequent scholarship news will be regularly reported in each of our association newsletters, posted on our web sites, and in our annual reports. You may also contact your association president at any time you have a question or need further information.
